Choosing large print puzzle books for seniors: a practical guide

By Emre As, October 19, 2026

Puzzle books are one of the easiest gifts to get right for a grandparent or older friend, as long as the print is comfortable to read. Here is what to look for.

What large print should mean

Large print usually means text of at least 16 points. In a puzzle book the numbers and letters inside the grid should be bigger still, with plenty of space in each square. One puzzle per page on a full 8.5 by 11 inch page is the most comfortable layout.

Pick the right puzzle type

  • Sudoku suits people who enjoy logic and numbers. A good book starts easy and builds up.
  • Word search suits people who like words and a relaxed pace. Themed lists make it more fun.
  • Mixed bundles are a safe choice when you are not sure which they will prefer.

Check the difficulty mix

Look for clearly labelled levels. A mix such as 30 easy, 40 medium and 30 hard puzzles lets someone warm up and still find a challenge. Well made sudoku should never require guessing; every puzzle should have exactly one solution.

Answer keys and small touches

An answer key at the back is essential. A gift page, a time and date line, and tick boxes next to word lists are small details that make a book feel considered.

Printable or paperback?

A paperback is a ready-made gift. A printable PDF arrives instantly, can be printed again and again, and lets you print single puzzles for a holiday party or a senior center activity.
